During the July 2020 Xbox Games Showcase featuring a roadmap of Xbox Series X games, Obsidian Entertainment revealed its next project: an epic fantasy RPG called Avowed. This isn't technically a new IP, as it's set in the same world of Pillars of Eternity. With that said, it's the first time this world has been explored in such a fashion.

While there's a lot left to be explained, we can definitely garner some interesting details based on what Obsidian has said so far — as well as carefully examining the reveal trailer. Here's everything we know about Avowed so far.

What is Avowed?

Avowed is a first-person, triple-A RPG set in the world of Eora. Eora is the setting for the Pillars of Eternity games. It's a rich fantasy setting with continents and islands, mysterious creatures and magic.

Obsidian has a long history crafting RPG titles, with Knights of the Old Republic 2, Fallout: New Vegas, Pillars of Eternity and The Outer Worlds being just a handful of the studio's past titles.

We don't know much about Avowed's gameplay right now. It's a first-person game, so it appears unlikely (but not impossible) that there's a third-person mode like in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. Obsidian says it's an "epic, triple-A" title, so players can definitely expect a large RPG with dozens of hours of quests.

We do see a very brief glimpse of a character dual-wielding a sword and magic at the end of the announcement trailer. The sword is glowing with runes that possibly translate into "Oathbinder." Meanwhile, the banners on the fortress in the gameplay trailer are emblazoned with the crown that symbolizes Woedica, the goddess of justice and law.

Is Avowed coming to Xbox One?

Avowed does not appear to be coming to the Xbox One, as it is only listed on the official website as being available on Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S and PC.

Is Avowed coming to PS5?

No. Microsoft acquired Obsidian Entertainment in 2018 and Xbox Game Studios is publishing this game. Avowed — and Pillars of Eternity — are now Xbox IPs. Avowed will not come to the PS5.

Is Avowed coming to PC?

Yes. All Xbox Game Studios titles release on PC and Avowed will not be an exception to the rule.

When is the Avowed release date?

Right now, Avowed doesn't have a release date or even a vague window in which to expect its arrival. Matt Booty, Head of Xbox Game Studios, previously stated that games releasing within the first year of the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S releasing would be available on Xbox One as well. Avowed is not coming to Xbox One.

Extrapolating from that, it's very likely that Avowed will be available in 2022 at the earliest, where it could end up being one of the best Xbox RPGs. We'll be sure to update this when we have more information. Whenever it arrives, it'll be available on Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S and PC. Like all Xbox Game Studios titles, it'll also launch day one into Xbox Game Pass.
